Questionnaire Results

Question1

The majority of people that took part in my questionnaire was female. There was 17 female and 8 male. I found that men were not as interested in a dancing documentary than women were. Before i handed out the questionnaire i had an idea that women would be more interested in dancing as it is commonly known as a female hobby. When handing out the questionnaire's men read it and decided to give it back instead of filling it out.

Question2

After handing the questionnaire out i found that the majority of people i asked were between 16-20 and 26-30. This gives me a wide range of people that would be interested in the documentary and a much bigger target audience. I feel that the outcome was what i wanted as i knew not many 5-10 year olds would not be interested in watching a dancing documentary. The 16-20 year olds would be my main target audience as dancing is popular in this age group.
Question3

18 out of 25 people classed themselves as a dancer. I know dancers would be more interested in watching a dancing documentary, however i think that having people that aren't dancers would be good too as they might be interested in taking up dancing. The people that said they were dancers should know a lot about dancing, so might see the documentary from a different aspect. They might have the same story as the main girl does. The non-dancers will be watching something they wouldn't know a lot about but it may still interest them.
Question4

19 out of 25 people said they would be interested in watching a documentary. The other 6 didn't like the idea. However i like how they have been truthful and still have taken part in the questionnaire. Im glad that the majority of people that did take part in the questionnaire would be interested in watching the dancing documentary.
Question5

I found that 20 out of 25 people enjoy dancing/ enjoy watching dancing. This makes sense as 6 people said that they wouldn't like watching a dancing documentary and only 5 said they do not enjoy dancing/watching. I think that this is a good result from the questionnaire.
Question6

13 out of 25 people said that they were more interested in lively/upbeat dancing compared to calm/mellow dancing. This is good as the dancing documentary has more lively/upbeat dancing involved. However 12 people have said that they would rather see calm/mellow dancing which is a bit disappointing.
Question7

I found that 21 out of 25 people think that my dancing documentary would be popular which is very good! I am glad that the majority of the people said that the documentary would be popular and this has given me a positive feeling about it now.

Question8

The question of whether dancing should be classed as a physical sport had a negative outcome. 16 out of 25 people who took part said that dancing is not a physical sport. The majority of these people also said that dancing is a hobby therefore its not a sport. They also think that dancers aren't using as much energy as someone on a football/rugby pitch.
Question9

I'm happy with this result as i had a feeling that the people who said that they would not find the dancing documentary interesting were non-dancers and wouldn't like to dance. I was right as 5 out of 7 people said that they would not consider taking up dancing if they were given the opportunity. Some of the reasons included that they have no rhythm or that they just aren't interested in dancing.
Question10

12 out of 25 people think that the dancing documentary would suit being on the BBC channel. I also agree with this as the BBC is well known for showing documentaries of all different types.

Target Audience- Genre, Age and Sex

Gender- Male, Female
My Documentary will be made for both males and females to watch. I will not aim it at either sex because i feel my documentary can be benefited by both sex. I  have had a look on the internet at some statistics and out of males and females, males enjoy watching documentaries more than females do. I feel with my choice of documentary it will appeal more to females as it is about dancing.
Age
My documentary will be suitable for children of all ages as i have found the definitions of the age barriers and my documentary is appropriate for all ages.

Interview Scripts

Main Girl

How long have you been dancing?
I have been dancing for 8 years now. I started dancing when i was in year 5 because my teacher was doing an after school club for Latin American dancing. As soon as i started i fell in love with it, she requested that i should go to the dance school where she learnt when she was younger. The diamond dance centre.

How did it feel to go from your after school club to a proper dance school?
It was amazing, the atmosphere was incredible. I was welcomed into the school straight away and i made friends in no time at all. Also the dancing was more intense, the teachers were more strict than at my school.

What do you like so much about dancing?
I love the family feel of our dance school. We all look out for each other and we are all friends for life. I also love the theatrical side of it, all the make up and dresses. I really like when we go to the Nationwide Finals in Blackpool and we all come together and everyone puts their differences aside. We all cheer each other and out school spirit is amazing.

Grace & Emily

How long have you been dancing together?
2 Years now, we became dance partners at the beginning of the year, we were going to take it as an easy, fun year but then we realized we were really good together so we worked for it then came 1st in the Nationwide finals out of 50 couples!

How long have you been dancing for?
Grace: Since i was 3 so 15 years!! Wow i didn't realize it was that long!

How long have you been friends?
We have been friends for 9 years and were just as close now as we were back then, all them years ago.

How did you become friends?
We became friends through dancing. We started young and became friends at a young age, i suppose we've stayed this close because of dancing as well.

Why are there 2 girls dancing together and does it make dancing harder in competitions?
There are a lot of all girl partnerships because there aren't enough boys to go around so the girls go together. In competitions normally the boy-girl couples do better as its more appealing to the eye and it looks better, but then some all girl couples are really good and manage to beat them!

The teachers

Sarah - How does it make you feel when you see one of your lessons make a final or win?

Luke - Why did you want to start teaching dance?

Kyle- Is it easy to look at someone and know what to work on first?

Cara- What doe dancing mean to you?

Question for all- What do you love most about dancing and our dance school?

Head of the dance school

Documentary Analysis 6

http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p004r1f8

Directed by Conor McCormack, "Christmas With Dad" is the story of a young man struggling to define himself through fatherhood. AJ is just 23 years old but already a father to seven children, five from his partner's previous relationships. They live on a sprawling council estate on the outskirts of Bristol: an area plagued by unemployment, drugs and anti-social behaviour, where fewer residents go to university than in any other area of the UK.

I found Christmas with Dad compelling but rather sad-- it seems to me that more education would help the 'Dad' in such circumstances. The filmmaker might agree that a happier future appears unlikely. A beautifully structured film, and thought-provoking.

Documentary Analysis 4

http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p00n582m

A cautionary tale of three characters whose DIY projects have got out of hand. Unable to afford a fully-functioning boat each has bought a landlocked craft in varying states of dilapidation. We watch as they work on their ultimate escape project. Will they break out of the boat 'graveyard' or are their vessels an alternative shed to tinker in that offer no ultimate destination?

Well made with fine shots + editing. While it is about boats and people who love boats, it has evocative connotations - salvaging and restoring our own personal history; unemployment, value, the countryside - and more - that should make it of interest to everyone. 5 stars. Excellent film, seamless between watching and the 'obsessive' enthusiasts.

Documentary Analysis 2

http://www.bbc.co.uk/filmnetwork/films/p00bdl10

'Sundays' profiles three Englishmen. Jim has been running his candlelight ballroom dances for 21 years, Colin is an MG enthusiast who likes nothing more than to get out onto the open road on a Sunday afternoon, and David thinks Sundays should be banned.

This was a lovely little film but I had trouble with the audio. I know with doc-style shooting it is a bit of a problem but the bass made some of it unintelligible. Nevertheless, I thought it was well filmed and a good subject matter. Great little short.

I liked this and laughed out loud at the ballroom dancers doing the classic POV dance partner thing, but stilted....the way things were overlapped, sound and image, worked well, especially the guy who hates sundays ranting about an abyss during more shots of the ballroom dancers.

I think british films, of all kinds, are often too linear and boring; they don't do cross-cutting and they don't play around with image and sound as much as, say, good american films do.... so, nice to see some of that here.
